New lease of life for Cowles Stadium
From kick-boxing to line dancing, people in the City's eastern suburbs are discovering a wide range of different leisure pursuits at the newly refurbished Cowles Stadium.

Repainted and opened to a variety of groups since it returned to Council management around nine months ago, the stadium is assuming its rightful status as a community asset, says Cowles operations manager Ginny Bowden.

"With the different sorts of groups now coming to use the stadium, the events and programmes we have planned and are running at Cowles are focused to appeal to people right across the spectrum.

"As well as kick-boxing for women and line dancing for older people, activities at the stadium include holiday and after school programmes for people with disabilities, jazz dance classes and pre-school gymnastics," she says.

Previously concentrating mainly on basketball, Cowles is still the home of the sport in Canterbury, with the Aranui Basketball Academy training there three times a week, competitive basketball games held two evenings a week and weekends, and the Canterbury Rams using the stadium for training and national league games.
