Planning for the new millennium
While the world
celebrates the conclusion of a century and the birth of a
millennium, in two years time Canterbury will have some
extra reasons to mark a the moment and the Christchurch
City Council is making sure they will be recognised in
style. The year 2000 is the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Canterbury Province, the 160th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi by Ngai Tahu and 250 years of Ngai Tahu settlement in the region as well as heralding the new millennium. Christchurch City Council has established Turning Point 2000 to lead community participation in preparations for the year 2000. Turning Point 2000 director Rae Knutson says 300 volunteers have so far been involved to set up projects which will make the new millenium a true community celebration. "It is their vision and commitment that will ensure we will celebrate our people and region with tangible legacies for future generations," she says. Provisional projects for the year 2000 include: A Sister Cities Garden Park; a major science and technology exhibition; the establishment of a penguin colony at Godley Head; the building of a year 2000 waka; and a junior summit involving youth and policy makers from around the world.
