Worcester Street lime tree avenue extended
Worcester Boulevard's award-winning avenue design will soon extend east of Cathedral Square.
Fourteen lime trees flanking cobbled footpaths and a paved road will replace plane trees and a Chinese elm removed recently between the Square and Manchester Street.
Council arboriculturist Walter Fielding-Cotterell said the plane trees outgrew their location.
"They were threatening to damage the adjacent Old Government Building and crowd the street. They were already lifting the footpath and kerbing.
"The formal avenue effect reflects the importance of the Square and encourages people to move toward the City's heart. Spacing the lime trees will enhance the Old Government Building's facade," he said.
The new 4m trees will be planted further away from the Old Government Building, allowing them more room to mature highlighting rather than hiding the architecture.
Estimated value of trees on roadsides in Christchurch: $235,653,000 |
