Christchurch Voted 9th best Tourist City in the World 1997: "Travel & Leisure" magazine

From the Mayor

Mayor Vicki Buck Spring's here at last. Isn't it great to see all the daffodils and blossoms again.

Winter's behind us. I'm hoping that within three years the worst of that winter problem - smog - will also be a thing of the past.

It will take a mixture of real political will, a strong package of incentives to change to non-polluting fuels and a community determined to get rid of the problem. I know Christchurch has the resolve and capacity to achieve this.

This issue of City Scene tells you about a number of things happening in Christchurch, especially from children's perspectives. It's really important to hear their views and act on them so we know, and also feel that their City is a safe welcoming environment, and one in which they are listened to and valued.

A child-friendly City is something that goes well beyond anything the City Council can achieve. Every child needs someone who is their special champion, and that means all of us have to play a part. It's an ambition for the whole community.

Vicki Buck

MAYOR
