Good news for summer...

Popular Kidsfun expands to five new venues

Sports, games and arts and craft activities are proving a winning formula for Christchurch youngsters. Nearly 8,000 Christchurch children have taken part in the City Council's popular Kidsfun programme since it started in April 1996 popularity that has resulted in the after school programme's expansion to five new venues.

Piloted 18 months ago at Parklands, Shirley and Linwood Avenue, Kidsfun now also runs one afternoon a week from Rowley, Belfast, Aranui and Linwood North primary schools and the Redwood Scout Hall.

According to Kidsfun coordinator Karen Theobald, the programme provides free, fun recreational opportunities for children aged between five and ten years.

"We set up the programme when the need for after school activities in these areas was identified. Our programme evaluations show that Kidsfun has been very well received by children and their caregivers and well supported by the schools where it is operating.

"Parents and other caregivers appreciate being able to send younger children to regular, well organised activities and the children respond well to being in Kidsfun teams, and enjoy the mix of fun, non competitive activities," she said.

The feedback is also used to plan the weekly programmes. In term four the Kidsfun teams will lead activities such as a fair day, kids olympic games, water fun and creative work such as junk art. With warmer weather approaching, the parks, as well as indoor venues, will host Kidsfun.

Outdoor pools ready for a vintage summer

With the much publicised El Nino weather pattern expected to deliver a hot, dry summer to Canterbury, Christchurch's outdoor public swimming pools are set for a vintage year.

Council-owned Sockburn, Waltham and Halswell community pools all open in early November and stay open until March.

These poular pools attracted over 100,000 swimmers last year.

Sockburn, should prove a big drawcard this summer with its new beach volleyball area and basketball half court constructed, as well as the ever-popular hydroslide and inflatables in the pool.
