Winner of International award: Nations in Bloom Best Garden City in the world!

International bouquet for Christchurch

What local people have known all along is now official Christchurch is top garden City in the world. Councillor Gordon Freeman and Neiel Drain from the Council's Parks Unit were in Spain in early October to accept top honours in the "Nations in Bloom" competition. They were the smallest team by far and up against delegations of up to 30 people from other cities.

The competition has been developed by the International Federation of Park and Recreation Administration to find the world'sbest gardencity. Christchurch faced stiff opposition from the UK, Japan, Spain and South Africa to win the category for cities with more than 300,000 people.

Parks Manager Craig Oliver says: "Christchurch people can be really proud. It will have positive benefits for the City."
