Step Out Programme for Women

Around 11,000 Christchurch women are stepping out around the city each year, trying new sports and activities ranging from Tai Chi to tennis. With up to 20 different courses to choose from, the Step Out programmes are run at Pioneer Stadium, QEII Park and the Sockburn Recreation Centre with a golf programme offered at Rawhiti Golf Course.

North New Brighton woman Liesbeth King has taken part in swimming, gym and squash Step Out programmes at QEII for the last couple of years.

I exercise at QEII most mornings. The gym has a really friendly atmosphere and it's a good way to get out and about and meet people. You feel good after a work out. It sets you up for the day, she says.

Most Step Out programmes have creche facilities attached and all are very reasonably priced. They are designed to encourage women to participate in recreation when they may otherwise lack the resources or self-confidence. Term two programmes start in early May, with most catering for women at the beginner level for each activity. Courses include line dancing, aquajogging, yoga, swim and gym, badminton, aerobics, kick boxing for fitness and squash. Most are scheduled to run for six to ten weeks.
