Speed Limits Rationalised on City Arterial Network

Speed limits on a number of Christchurch roads and highways were rationalised recently to improve their safety for motorists and pedestrians. Changes came after a Christchurch City Council review in which 94 per cent agreed that speeds on roads and highways in Christchurch be reviewed. Traffic flow, speed, pedestrian and cycle use were all surveyed, as was the type of vehicles using particular roads. Consultation took place with drivers, pedestrians, residents, the Automobile Association, Transit NZ and the Police.

Most changes have been made on the Christchurch arterial network, taking traffic into, out of and around Christchurch. Speeds have generally been rationalised adjacent to recent housing or business developments to reflect changing land use in these areas.

Where changes have been made, speed limits on most roads have been lowered, although in a few cases speeds have been raised to remove anomalies.
