500 New Car Parks Will Boost Shopping North of the Square

Long-awaited by retailers north of Cathedral Square, up to 500 extra car parks will soon be available following redevelopment on the site of Farmers between Colombo and Armagh Streets.

A Christchurch City Council car park will be part of the development, which will include two levels of retail space underneath a seven level car park.

Robin Hughes of RG Hagler Developments Ltd, is managing the development for property owner Angus MacFarlane. He says the extra car parking signals a boost to shopping north of the Square.

"Development of Victoria Square, the Casino, the Convention Centre and associated hotels, has made parking in the area scarce. This new facility will improve this situation, benefiting retailers and shoppers in central Christchurch, " he says.

Keeping Farmers on the site is a clear signal for retailers north of the Square, says Robin Hughes."Farmers commitment as the largest retailer in this part of town demonstrates the potential for other retailers. Other developments will follow this one bringing a new emphasis and new business activity to the area," he says.

Building on the project is due to start in July and scheduled for completion in October next year.
