Policy locates new parks |
Locations
for eight new neighbourhood parks have been identified in Christchurch under a
new policy adopted by the City Council. Under the local parks acquisition policy, everybody should be provided with a local park within ten minutes walk. |
Sarah Duffell, author of the report recommending the policy, said a recent survey identified areas around the City which do not have parks within easy walking distance and were short of open space.
"Changing
residential development, particularly infill housing,
will highlight this shortage in the future. The usual
minimum area for parks large enough for children to be
able to play is 2,000 M2. New parks must have
plenty of street frontage, safe pedestrian access and
room for existing trees and new plantings," she
said. Constructing the new parks will depend on land becoming available in each area and funds being allocated through Council's budgeting process. |
Construction
of the 8,000 seat Westpac Trust Centre at Addington is on schedule and due for completion in August
next year. With an 8,200 capacity for concerts, 7,100 for
centre court sports events, 3,350 car parks and space for
250 exhibition booths, building on the venue started last
December. Bookings already confirmed for the centre include entertainment events ranging from Disney On Ice to an Edinburgh Tattoo style event, sports ranging from indoor motocross, Davis Cup Tennis, the 1999 Netball World Cup to gymnastics and a range of exhibitions including an international tourism expo. |
