Christchurch Becoming Organic Garden City

A new trust wants to add the word `organic' to Christchurch's traditional garden city image.

The Organic Garden City Trust has been developed by a number of groups and organisations, including the Christchurch City Council, to promote sustainable organic living in Christchurch.

According to trust spokesperson Paul Honeybone this will include encouraging people to grow, buy and eat organic products and to adopt organic methods for agriculture.

"The trust's main activities will be commercial development and education. We want to increase both the supply and the demand for organically grown products; and we want to inform members of the public and decision makers about the benefits of organic gardening.

"Experience overseas has shown the social benefits can be considerable. Community-based organic gardening, where local neighbourhoods grow their own vegetables, have the potential to bring people together, teach them new skills and provide an inexpensive source of food," he said. Other than the City Council, groups involved in the trust include education institutions, community groups, organic growers and retailers.
