Work to redevelop Cathedral Square will start early next year and is designed to put new life into an important part of the City Centre.
A final decision on the type of paving to be used will be made later this year, once tenders for both concrete aggregate pavers and granite pavers have been assessed, Council is planning to begin the project in February 1998.
Stage one of the four stage project will concentrate on the north west area around Chancery Lane and will move to the south east, around the Millennium Hotel, before doubling back to the north east, in front of The Press building.
The final stage of the two year project will focus on the area in front of the Cathedral.
Cathedral Square is Christchurch's most important gathering place and the focal point for commercial, employment and cultural activity in the central City.
The redevelopment has been designed to encourage the reuse of spaces around the Square and enable businesses to use the Square more effectively.
