New Zealand, Looking Back - Looking Forward

A good start has been made on the project initiated and supported by the City Council to celebrate the year 2000 in Canterbury.

A community-based steering committee which was set up last year has been working on "Turning Point 2000 - Looking Back, Looking Forward ". A bold red, black and white logo has been chosen as the trademark for promoting and marketing Canterbury towards the turn of the millennium.

Canterbury University Chancellor, Ian Leggat, chaired the Steering Committee which considered research, funding and public relations. "We aimed to develop a logo which was recognisably Canterbury; would be distinctive, and capture the spirit of the region," he says. "The logo uses the traditional Maori and Canterbury colours and blends the symbolism and characteristics of the tangata whenua with other regional features such as the land and Aoraki / Mount Cook.

"Turning Point 2000 will allow us to celebrate the past, rejoice in the present and look forward to the future. It's our hope that Canterbury will be strengthened by a clearer community understanding of where we have come from and where we are going," he says. The year will be celebrated by a variety of community-based activities and events together with some major regional projects.

The Steering Committee completed its task in December and the overall planning is now in the hands of a recently formed eight member Executive Committee which is being serviced and supported by the Communications and Promotions Unit of Christchurch City Council.
