City Scene - Christchurch City Council Newsletter - March 1996

Kids Eye View

Generally speaking, local children are very positive about Christchurch.

This is according to a survey of about 900 children, conducted for the City Council's Children's Strategy and understood to be the biggest survey of its kind of primary and intermediate school children in New Zealand.

The results will be published in the Strategy which will be launched on March 28.

CCC Children's Advocate Lyn Campbell says there are strong messages. "Children want to live in `clean, green' areas, they want to be safe, they are concerned about their education and they like shopping malls."

Children have given their views on how Christchurch can be improved, how their neighbourhoods can be improved, how to promote the city to children in other places and what defines good and not-so-good schools.

They all know who Mayor Vicki Buck is, except one group of youngsters who think she is the Prime Minister!

Almost 100 caregivers and 44 community groups were also surveyed for the Strategy, which Lyn says will be about "community empowerment and responsibility," not about the Council imposing regulations on people.

"We want children to be part of the consultative process so that when decisions are made, children's opinions are considered."

The slogan for the Strategy will be "Thinking Future...? Think Children".
