Scenic Drives

Just before Christmas the City Council, with sponsorship support from Mobil, launched the first of its scenic drives. Twenty-five thousand brochures were produced for the Garden City Drive and their popularity has been such that a reprint of a further 20,000 has had to be undertaken.

The Garden City Drive is the first of three to be developed and as the name suggests takes in many of the city's finest public and private gardens. The tour begins at the Canterbury Tourism and Visitor Centre in Oxford Terrace and then heads northwest via Hagley Park, Mona Vale, Ilam, Avonhead, Fendalton, Millbrook and finally the Botanic Gardens.

The brochure has a map on one side showing the route with points of interest marked. On the other side are full colour photographs of these with a short text outlining the significance of each feature. Signs are about to be placed en route to help drivers find their way. The success of the Garden City Drive has now given the impetus to develop the remaining two, the Port Hills and Riverside Drives, which will be published this year and next year.

The brochures are available from the Christchurch Visitor Information Centre, Mobil stations, hotels, motels, rental car companies and other visitor venues.

Further information can be obtained from either Andrew Craig (craiga@ccc.govt.nz) on 371-1642 or Barbara Burtt, ph. 371-1817, Christchurch City Council.
