With the help of local walking
enthusiasts, the Council's Leisure and Community Services Unit is producing a guide to
Christchurch walks. Publications assistant Kjesten Nilsson says "The guide is intended for everyone who enjoys recreational walking". It will contain more than 100 walks including heritage walks and places along the Port Hills, in the central city, in parks and Burwood Plantation. It will also feature walks administered by the Department of Conservation such as the Groynes, Kaiapoi and Barnett Park. Most of the walks take less than three hours and are suitable for all levels of fitness and ability. "In addition to descriptions of the walks and what to see along the way, the guide will include advice on the equipment necessary for each trip, the degree of difficulty, a route map and heritage and ecological information," says Kjesten, who will soon have walked all the routes herself with groups from all over the city. |
The guide will be available in October from book shops and Council offices (the final cost is yet to be determined - it is intended to be within most people's budgets).
If you know a walk that is off the beaten track and enjoyable, please contact Kjesten Nilsson at the Civic Offices on 371-1280. It may still be able to be included in the guide.
