The City Council recognises that
the Robert McDougall Art Gallery has outgrown
its present premises in the Botanic Gardens. The number of people visiting the gallery
over the past few years is growing - faster than Christchurch's population as the gallery
becomes ever more popular. The McDougall just doesn't have the room in its present buildings to show its extensive collection or to properly host travelling exhibitions. The Council is determined Christchurch should have an art gallery it can be proud of, one that will continue the present gallery's excellent work of bringing art and people together. Getting a satisfactory new gallery will be a long term project, as expansion at the present site is impossible. The Council's intention for this year is to find a suitable new location and take at least preliminary steps to secure use of the new site. |
