Although the City's population is growing, the rate of growth has slowed. In 2001, five yearly growth was 2.3%. This was the lowest recorded since 1991. This pattern of growth is consistent with national trends.

Maps of the population at 2001, change in population from 1996 to 2001, and population density at 1996 and 2001 for Christchurch City, Christchurch Central City and Christchurch City's Neighbouring Territorial Local Authorities can be found here.

Christchurch City - Population Projections - to 2026
According to Statistics New Zealand's medium population projection, Christchurch City's resident population is expected to increase to 379,000 by the year 2026. Growth during this period will occur at a progressively slower rate as a result of a gradual reduction in natural increase and also relatively low migration from other parts of the country and overseas. The resident population of all the Wards except Fendalton/Waimairi increased between the 1996 and 2001 census. The Burwood/Pegasus Ward had the greatest increase in population, followed by the Riccarton/Wigram Ward, reflecting significant building activity in these areas during recent years.

Area Unit

Area unit populations range from 5,931 recorded in Parklands to 246 in McLeans Island on the outskirts of the City. Since 1996, greatest population increases have occurred in Styx, Marshland and Ferrymead, all the edge of the City, where considerable new building activity has also taken place. In contrast, resident populations actually declined in a number of areas, including Phillipstown, Templeton and St Albans West.
