Definitions

Usually resident population within each meshblock = the number of people within each meshblock.
Note: Some meshblocks will have a large population simply because the meshblocks are large. The following maps showing the change in usually resident population and usually resident population density give a better indication of where populations are concentrated

Change in usually resident population = the number of people in a meshblock at 2001 minus the number of people in the same meshblock at 1996. 

Density of the usually resident population = the number of people per hectare, which accounts for the differing sizes of meshblocks. This is calculated by dividing the number of people in the meshblock by the area of the meshblock.

This map shows the usually resident population (the number of people) within each meshblock in Christchurch at March 2001.

Christchurch City - Change in Usually Resident Population, 1996-2001
This map shows the change in the usually resident population (change in the number of people) from 1996 to 2001 within each meshblock. Areas which have experienced the greatest population increase are Sawyers Arms, Halswell East, Styx, Marshland, Styx Mill and Travis. See report on Residential Building Consents, June 2003.

Christchurch City - Population Density - 1996 and 2001 
These two maps show the density of Christchurch's usually resident population at 1996 and 2001 in each meshblock. Generally densities are higher near the Central City and suburban focal points. These areas are specifically zoned to allow more concentrated populations.


Christchurch Central City

For the following maps, the Central City is the area bounded by the Four Avenues - Bealey, Fitzgerald, Moorehouse and Deans Avenues.

This map shows the usually resident population (the number of people) within each meshblock in the Central City at March 2001.

Christchurch Central City - Change in Usually Resident Population, 1996-2001
This map shows the change in the usually resident population (change in the number of people) from 1996 to 2001 within each meshblock of the Central City. Overall the Central City increased by 669 people. The greatest growth occurred in the meshblock on the corner of Park Terrace and Salisbury Street, reflecting the construction of apartments.

Christchurch Central City - Population Density - 1996 and 2001 
These two maps show the population density of the Central City at 1996 and 2001 in each meshblock. Population density has increased in 2001 in the areas east of Latimer Square and to the north of Salisbury Street, as a result of apartments being built.


Christchurch City's Neighbouring Territorial Local Authorities

The following maps are of the four Territorial Local Authorities (TLAs) that are close to Christchurch City - Waimakariri, Selwyn, Banks Peninsula and Hurrunui. These are predominantly rural districts comprising small urban settlements.

This map shows the usually resident population (the number of people) within each meshblock of the TLAs near Christchurch at March 2001.

Christchurch City's Neighbouring TLAs - Change in Meshblock Usually Resident Population, 1996-2001
This map shows the change in the usually resident population (change in the number of people) from 1996 to 2001 within each meshblock. The greatest increase in population occurred in Rolleston and Darfield in the Selwyn TLA.

These two maps show the density of the usually resident population at 1996 and 2001 in each meshblock of the TLAs near Christchurch. Population density has increased in Ohoka in the Waimakariri TLA and in West Melton and Rolleston in the Selwyn TLA.
