The Hagley/Ferrymead Ward saw the greatest increase in dwelling numbers between 1996 and 2001, followed by the Burwood/Pegasus Ward. The Akaroa/Wairewa Ward had the smallest increase in occupied dwellings over the five years to 2001. Overall, Christchurch experienced a six per cent increase in the number of occupied dwellings between 1996 and 2001.

Occupied Dwellings
Area unit occupied dwellings range from 2,463 recorded in Sydenham to 3 in Inlet-Port Lyttelton. Since 1996, greatest dwelling increases have occurred in Styx, Ferrymead and Avon Loop where considerable new building activity has also taken place. In contrast, occupied dwellings actually declined in a number of areas, including Yaldhurt, East Linwood, St Albans West, Inlet-Port Lyttelton and Ilam.
