- Have more community based projects
- More things for people to go and see more concerts
- Promote it better to international (travellers?)
- Promote local festivals and gatherings - brings together
people from their community
- More locally based activities and entertainment - because
it would involve local people
- Council should highlight and provide resources for more
community involvement - because it would be beneficial
- Do more of what they are currently doing - because we
could do with more
- Support more strongly all community groups not
necessarily with money - access and needs need to be
known about
- CCC should have more organised activities eg activities
to draw the community together, information seminars to
explain the CCC - people need reasons and explanations
- More advertising - I don't think they are doing much
- Making Christchurch people more aware of what we've got
in the city, facilities - I don't feel the council is
doing sufficient advertising
- More activities for elderly people - the elderly have to
pay for most things, they shouldn't have to pay
- They should have community or neighbourhood meetings run
by the council. - it (the meeting) might bring people in
the community closer together
- A more personal approach by council as to what they are
doing - because one really only reads about it
- Don't know, no ideas on how to improve it - it's just a
feeling they should do a little more. Think about this
- Promoting more activities for older people, get them
together - seems a lack of things for older people (50+)
- Put more into the communities - people will benefit from
it
- Create activities within the community - not enough done
- More community activity, more sports equipment - not
enough provided
- Publicise Christchurch identity more - make us more aware
what is available
- Have more say in what's going on - should get involved
more
- They should do more to keep teens off streets - there is
not many places young people can go to for entertainment
- More publicity of what the council is doing. Suggest use
of the Christchurch Star for weekly input from council -
to inform people of the good things the CCC is doing
- More things to do at weekends in the central city - the
central city, not the Arts Centre can be very dead at
weekends for couples who want to do a range of shopping
- Integrate the different areas more so that there is no
class system as there is at present - real gap between
the "rich side" of town and the poorer areas
- Parking
- Put more into suburbs - too much money being spent in
council meetings
- More social events for residents, especially during
winter months - people need to be encouraged to get
together more
- Support for rugby and cricket teams - few spectators -
loss of revenue
- More community based services - fragmented services and
support at present
- Not sure - we don't really come together. Amiss
- More for the younger people in the suburbs
- There are lots of things going on that people don't know
about, more publicity - I grew up here but I didn't know
about the Port Hills walkways and the Botanic Gardens
- Probably in terms of commitment; supporting each other;
helping those who need it; encouraging those who help
others - I see it as a need in every community
- Have fun runs and community events for families; try to
develop a community spirit by bringing people together -
community activities unifies people
- More social gatherings and events in localities - people
get to meet each other in their neighbourhood
- Really try to involve people. Feels as though we are on
the outside looking in. Everything for the tourists -
it's what you see
- They could do more advertising - don't feel that the
average person in Christchurch knows what is available
- Don't have any idea, happy with what you are doing, just
more - I believe that money is better spent on hospitals
and schools rather than community halls
- More advertising - I would like more mail drops; I would
like to know of all the things going on in my community
so I can support them
- Maybe service centres could do things for their areas -
get-togethers
- Get people to unite in a common cause - the whole cross
section of society. Maybe get Winter Olympics,
Commonwealth Games or a trade fair
- Advertise Christchurch more, things to do
- A lot more things for kids
- More things for people to do. Something else at QEII.
Brighton needs a bit of an uplift. Brighton used to be
good on a Saturday
- More festivals, more free concerts, more displays to go
to. More neighbourhood school holiday programmes
- They are getting much better. I think they could get more
of the big community events (eg fireworks) out into the
suburbs
- Don't know
- More free entertainment or good cheap entertainment - pay
for rates so expect more in return
- More community get-togethers - people don't get out with
their neighbours, they're often isolated from those in
their neighbourhood
- Become more noticeable, promote themselves so people know
who they are - because people are anti-social
- More community involvement in the parks and more sporting
events - the events that are in place work well but more
could be done
- Going along the right track especially with the summer
festivals but more perhaps localised festivals - well
because there aren't enough
- Retain the original Christchurch image and more community
police on the beat - too much street crime that's not
being addressed
- Events to help foster neighbourhood participation eg
Phillipstown councillors walk with the residents - people
are distant and scared
- More done about the skinheads and gangs
- Beautifying more parts of the city, improving roads for
pedestrians and cyclists, especially inner city - to help
all people in all areas of Christchurch feel proud of
their city
- Financial, community, and personal rewards to generate
community spirit - those rewards would encourage pride in
local community
- More of the free concerts or Shakespearian plays -
because low income families enjoy the arts too
- No idea at the moment - community spirit is a good thing
- Continue the events and festivals throughout the year -
because the events bring people together. More could be
done in the winter especially
- More activities for the young ones - because there isn't
enough
- More promotions for the city with community involvement,
there generally is not enough - it would increase
positive attitudes
- Need more community groups, particularly women being
isolated, "isolation in the suburbs" needs
residents group - because there is nothing for the
elderly and woman at home
- Consult with community groups to get them working
together - it isn't done enough
- Have more events and festivals in the winter and more in
our local neighbourhood - because there isn't enough
- More neighbourhood participation ie neighbour groups -
because there is not enough especially in Linwood
- More promotion of community policing and events
- Pushing support for Canterbury teams and to encourage
business to do the same
- Advertising should be more widespread. Things in general
that are going on in town - I don't always know what's
going on, I would like to see a bit more widespread
advertising
- More free concerts, Canterbury Beer Festival, more swap
meets - will bring people - young and old together, will
attract tourists
- More publicity about Summertimes and other free events. -
a lot of people still don't know all that is put on by
the CCC
- More festivals - need to bring people together
- Need to encourage people to get to know their neighbours
through neighbourhood support etc - people don't seem to
have enough times for other people
- Encourage more group and sporting activities - respondent
works with young people and young people from groups tend
to communicate a lot better
- More publicity about what is going on especially at
community level - don't hear about events
- Try to ensure that people can live without nuisances eg
noise and skateboarders - should channel social money
into groups that help city
- On right track with festivals - need more of the same
- If they had more concerts that's always a good thing - I
think having those concerts has been a major step for the
council
- They could be doing more things for suburbs rather than
everything being in the centre of town all the time -
because it would be quite nice to be able to walk to
things rather than going all the way into town
- Somehow encourage everyday person to become more
patriotic - my general feeling is that ordinary people do
not feel passionate or attached to Christchurch
- Make car parking cheaper - not encouraging people into
the city
- More local coverage on national t.v `local news' - t.v is
where people get their news and information from
- I think things that street parties could be promoted - it
aids security; get to know neighbours
- Should install community pride, starting at primary
school - a lot of kids don't appreciate what they've got,
need to be educated in this area
- More community watch type of thing. Put more community
events on at Halloween or times like that - because they
don't do enough and a lot of the things they do are in
town. They should bring things out to Brighton
- They could do a few more events to get the people
involved. Raise community spirit. Everything is done in
summer, there should be more done in winter - because
people don't hibernate in winter. The council should
organise some inside activities for the people in winter.
People will come if they see it's a big event. People
will come for a look anyway to satisfy their curiosity
- Have more neighbourhood projects that aren't a huge
organisation, just people involved around the
neighbourhood. Like the sand dunes planting here in South
Brighton - people will pour in for any neighbourhood
projects
- Provide some more incentives eg free parking, shuttle
buses to promote city centre - not enough people go to
city centre
- More family oriented events - more concentration on the
family rather than the individual to attract the whole
family
- More parking facilities in town. - to make it easy for
parking.
- Performances and events for children in suburbs as well
as city - not enough weekend entertainment for children
- Promote good things youth are doing - more recognition of
good and also those involved in giving their time to such
groups
- Festivals are great, can't think of anything specific
- Promote "Of Course You Canterbury" more -
Christchurch has a lot to offer we should do more to get
major `expo' type promotions with all the facilities we
have - more facilities are still required for
international conventions, with more parking available
- More information and involvement of local community -
people drift along without any concern for each other -
this would help bring people together
- Stop paying councillors. Get councillors out setting
examples - they do the job for the glory so why pay them
a packet to do it. Just need a mayor and volunteers.
Council executives make decisions
- More suburban activities - not enough at present
- More advertising of events, use the Christchurch Star
more - don't always know of events eg Summertimes events
- Giving more support to Canterbury sport teams - this
would help them become more successful and instil a sense
of pride in Canterbury achievements
- The council should do more for the elderly who built the
city - that would help the wider community
- Do more community group things like the Summertimes
festivals - they should do winter festivals, all year
round festivals. - because I think it would lift the
community spirit to a level that no other city in New
Zealand has. Because it's small, it could do that
- Perhaps inform the public more of what's going on in the
place, perhaps advertise more on t.v and newspaper about
their plans and what's going on. Encourage people to join
in more - not a lot - they don't have time I suppose. It
has to be more appealing to get people to take part in
festivals etc, consultation about council plans etc
- Advertise on t.v and on the radio for events and
festivals - because there's not a lot of advertising on
the radio for events and festivals
- They do well and that energy should be kept going -
things shouldn't stand still
- Boosting it up - north and south entrance to Christchurch
spruced up to look welcoming - to make it attractive and
to show we have something special about Christchurch
- Should make people here aware of how lucky we are
compared with other parts of New Zealand - racial tension
down here that there seems to be elsewhere especially the
North Island
- More programmes that involve different ethnic groups - a
bit concerned about lack of tolerance towards other races
especially immigrants
- Would have liked to go to festivals tackle safety issue -
concerned after 3pm I don't feel secure taking children
into town, glue-sniffers etc - would like to enjoy the
city, but feel I can't risk going to town etc
- Put more time into caring for the people forget about
doing up the city
- Regionalise Summertimes program (divide up into Sumner /
Hornby or city). Avoid corporate Summertimes - would not
like to see it become C.D Summertimes - could be easy to
lose sight of Christchurch community spirit and become
commercially based. Did not like to pay to enter ANZ Wine
and Food Festival
- Canterbury slogan "Of Course you Canterbury"
has now died. Give us a new slogan and make use of our
Canterbury colours - because I believe it will give us a
common sense of identity. Business friends in Auckland /
Wellington wear city ties
- Improve and continue Summertimes and group entertainment
- best ways of promoting group / community identity
- Should acknowledge that we are the national centre for
training persons in film and t.v. Council doesn't promote
this fact - am expert in this field and believe council
should promote Christchurch as production centre for film
and t.v industry
- People helping each other out - they could teach people
to take control of their lives - skills and ideas not
just money, food, work ethics and stuff - society we have
been brought up in people expected to be given hand-outs
and fixing their problems. They should be taught to do it
themselves - you should fix your own problems - life
skills
- Markets, Summertimes, they should advertise more - more
people would be aware of what's on
- More of those family-oriented things like Summertimes -
because they've got all the parks and that to do it in so
they should be able to use them
- They should listen to what people want - because I know
of a certain area in Christchurch which is trying to
upgrade itself and tidy itself but the council won't help
- Just encourage fun sports and activities in the park -
community based activities - so everybody can participate
and have a good time
- They could never do enough you can always do more
- They should get more involved with people like Lions and
Rotary and things
- More liaison and feedback
- More activities like during the summer months. There are
lots of music concerts but not a lot of family events.
Some should be located in the suburbs
- Promote a greater sense of community in the suburbs. Make
more effort and address community disadvantage. Provide
child care /after-school care and other community
services - because they are things not being done that
give people a sense of community
- Have more community based facilities to get local kids
out playing around - interacting in their own area -
apart from clubs, see a lack of facilities for locals to
play touch rugby casually
- More things like Classical Sparks to bring people
together for good times. Keep up what is done now -
brings people together
- Find out what produces community spirit and do it -
people are very cliquey - tend to stick to themselves
- More advertising about things - because people say they
don't know things are on
- Promote activities that include a wider range of people -
to develop a sense of community spirit
- Work on community social cohesion programme - no point in
having flash buildings if it's not safe to walk around
- Do more to get rid of the evidence of homelessness in the
city centre - increasing numbers of people cannot manage
on the money they get
- Keep the city looking neat, tidy and beautiful makes
people happy to live here. Keeping the streets clean.
Cleaning up graffiti; making it an offence - if things
look scungy nobody respects things; everything else
included
- Just promoting Christchurch elsewhere - because places
like Queenstown are getting more visitors for longer
- I am horrified that the council has made nothing of the
news that out of over 600 cities, Christchurch was chosen
as the garden city of the world this year - few people
that I talk to even know about it
- Reconsider the council sponsorship and perhaps
incorporate smaller groups and more localities. Try to
encourage good publicity about the splendid free
festivals etc - let the little people have a say. Try to
counter the bad publicity from the few drunken louts at
the sparks concert
- There ought to be more group activities to keep young
people off the streets. More care for the elderly and
young mums. Now Plunket etc is cut down, more help is
needed. It could be in local areas but official
introductions from people who can help to those who need
it are required
- More promotion and advertising of what's available - lot
of people don't know what's on in Christchurch
- Not dabble in social issues - because it is increasing my
rates unnecessarily. That's why I pay tax
- Make the streets safer for the old people to get out and
about. Help the homeless more and the old people -
because there is not enough done for old people ie
medical costs, entertainment and travel costs should be
reduced
- Pay less attention to greedy developers and pay more
attention to the character and personality of the areas -
focal points for people to gather and meet should be
promoted or created to enjoy Christchurch's pretty
scenery and lovely character
- Should promote themselves better, a better PR unit - too
much of a gap between bureaucracy and average citizen
- More bumper sticker promotions etc - to promote
Christchurch to other people
- Should consider social concerns more. Should be more
things for youth and more jobs for young people
- More PR work and general promotion of the good points of
the city - needs more promotion on a national and
international scale
- The pollution thing - can't something be done to improve
the smoke from open fires - the electricity is so
expensive make the electricity cheaper
- More cultural events in the city - I find it interesting
and so would other people
- I think the council should organise a tidiest street
competition - New Zealand is such a tiny country we
should be squeaky clean. It would make Christchurch
people proud
- Just keep up all the free concerts etc. They are great.
How about having collections at them and putting the
money towards our own heart unit - it would bring an
enormous sense of achievement
- Opportunities should not be missed to sing Christchurch's
successes ie winning the international beautiful garden
prize - how many Christchurch people know that, let alone
the rest of New Zealand? Good news like that should be
capitalised on
- More truant neighbourhood control - fear of a real
accident and bad tone of vandalism on neighbourhood
- CCC should provide more activities for teenagers.
Employment opportunities also - from personal experience
of a daughter who works with IHC people three days a week
for no pay but this is not considered at all when she has
applied for jobs
- More advertising of events and festivals - respondent
would like to know more about events
- Litter campaigns (educational) in halls and schools -
children should be taught to keep the city clean and also
adults
- Organise more events in the suburbs - closer to home
- More events. More concerts. More free activities - brings
people together. Not everyone can afford everything.
People feel they're getting value for their rates
- More family events - bring people together
- Develop Summertimes programme more eg in park, develop
beaches - I enjoy the beach and social events
- Providing a gym (centrally sited) with a cheaper entry -
it would help to keep the young off the streets and give
opportunities for exercising at a reasonable rate
- More publicity - I do not feel that all people are aware
of what services the council provides in their offices
- Perhaps if they increased the number of festivals,
brought them out into the suburbs - maybe people could
have things to partake in more actively within their own
community
- I would like to know more about what they're doing. I'd
like to see a booklet about what my council is doing. -
because I think people should be aware of what their
council is doing
- Get out of the garden city thing. Fix the little dingy
places like us (South Brighton). Fix the grass berms. The
sea wind and sand just kills it - because South Brighton
doesn't look nice
- Find out what Wellington and Dunedin do, because I feel
different when living there - Christchurch people too
conservative, don't talk to strangers
- "The City that Shines" is a silly saying /
backward move - if that's the best on offer we need to
change our public relations people
- It is too important for young people to have a sense of
belonging to the city - what about a jingle or motto to
appeal to young people. Chances to get involved eg
telethon for young people
- Need to cater for older people in the community -
community spirit really bases around families of all
types. To get back to caring more about the people in our
families. Will have a ripple effect throughout the
community - neighbourhood watch, street character
- More policemen. More beautifying of Christchurch. Clearer
advertising of events - because it will promote a better
community spirit. If you know events are on you are more
likely to go
- Should be keeping the city nice and tidy - they do not
always collect rubbish in the street, especially if it's
fallen off one of their own trucks
- While a summer programme is catered for, the council
could also do more over the winter season - Christchurch
has much to offer in the winter
- The council should go more for residents' amenities
rather than tourists' - eg electric bus system within the
four avenues before the tram system
- Make residents more aware of what is happening in
Christchurch. Lower the costs of council funded
facilities eg swimming pools - as a parent, I'd like to
know what is available for my children to do
- A t.v campaign of some sort, perhaps more suburban
meetings
- Promote the city a lot more farther afield - a lot of
people don't know what we've got down here (in the North
Island for example)
- Increase their work in social issues bringing involvement
from the whole community
- Maybe if a questionnaire was done "what do people
treasure / value in the community / Christchurch?".
I would like to know more about the child advocate
position and the children's day celebration. I think it's
really important to develop community
- Try and have a wider range of activities, events
- I don't know, ban cars in the city and make everyone bus
together - can't think of anything else
- Probably asking the people what the people want, all
sorts of community groups, more group activities for the
people to get into - when you want more community spirit
you have to get people together
- Have more get-togethers, community functions together,
sports, just get people together - because people need to
identify as Cantabrians
- More events
- Make people proud of where they live
- More advertising of community activities in suburbs -
because there is not enough information
- Keep up with Summertimes events. More festivals. Council
should sharpen up the square - pride in that part of the
city. - because it is the councils job to promote
community spirit
- Can't think of anything at the moment - see above
- No ideas
- The arts centre attracts a lot of young people but where
else is there for youth; not just shops. Picnics?
- I commend the council for all the activities like
Summertimes. Like anything you can always do more and be
open to new ideas
- I don't know off hand
- Initiate more commercially based activities and have the
facilities to give out up-to-date information to the
public. Perhaps a desk at the civic offices to give out
and receive details - people nowadays are not prepared to
just accept things. They expect good communication
- Community group meetings
- Make people more proud
- Logo
- Focus more on the garden awards and good practice
management. Summertime festival events are a bit stale -
because the councillors are not united, too much
bickering and not a united front
- Might need to do a bit more over the winter months if
there were areas that are under cover that would be good.
- I don't know - I don't like community spirit as much as
everyone else who lives in Christchurch does. With all
the sports and things - I can't stand all of that sort of
thing
- Obtain more input from local residents - well you can see
how people have really got in to the things in the summer
months
- They should have more police on the beat. - so that
people will do more for their community themselves
- More events maybe sporting for Cantabrians attractions -
monument or something that would make us proud. - with
these uncontrolled youth and youngsters out on the street
that just don't want to work. I think they need to be in
the area to command a bit of respect. Linwood, Aranui,
Wainoni and New Brighton areas especially
- More communication more involvement of residents more
publicity, public meetings
- Christchurch flag more free parking less draconian
building regulations
