- I moved house and the shops are just a couple of houses
down
- A couple of new ones round the corner. Seems like too
many shops, too many shopping malls but South Shore needs
servicing, more shops
- Less convenient because of the loss of local dairy
- Eastgate and The Palms malls
- Lost two dairies through closures
- The malls are more convenient
- Lost two dairies because of closure
- Have trouble with transport
- The upgrading of the Eastgate shopping mall
- Because they have been upgraded
- They are handy for me
- Most things I require can be purchased at a nearby mall
- More shops variety
- More malls, more compact - do not have to go far
- The Palms made more convenient/closer
- The Palms, I like going there. Closer, more convenient
from here - 5 minutes drive to The Palms
- Harder to get parking in small blocks
- Moved house
- More malls
- Not too far away
- Better services
- Several malls very handy
- Locality of shops with free covered parking
- The Palms and Eastgate are great for us
- The New Brighton Mall; Eastgate are all handy to us
- Better malls available
- The new malls or revamped malls in the east are a
pleasure to visit
- Like the revamped malls, but would like the central city
shops to have shopping hours at weekends
- Have shifted to another area
- Everything contained in malls
- Have lost a couple of shops in Wilson's Road
- Shops on Warrington / Barbadoes corner changed, no
grocery shop any more
- The Palms development
- Extensively used The Palms development. Continually well
served locally - Barbadoes/ Warrington
- Closeness
- Becoming closer
- Range is satisfactory
- Presence of shopping malls - very close
- Not far to travel for shopping
- I've moved to an area with more shops nearby
- We moved closer to the shops
- I've moved away from a more convenient area in the city
centre
- Riccarton mall
- The Palms
- Lots of smaller shops opening in High St area (newer
shops)
- Can walk everywhere now (since moving)
- Shops closer here than where we were living
- Moved house - closer to shops
- The Palms shopping centre was completed
- The Palms shopping centre was completed
- The Palms has gone up
- Because we've got The Palms shopping centre
- Shops that respondent used north of square (Farmers
block) now duty free. Not so convenient to go to other
end of town
- The Palms shopping mall
- The Palms mall
- New mall in Marshlands Rd
- The Palms
- Everything's together in this area
- They're all around without too far to go
- Open later hours - upgraded a lot - not too far to go
- Overhead walkways, more car parks
- Not so close to shops since moving
- More variety now Eastgate done up, plus Pak n Save
- Building shops all around here
- Construction of new mall (The Palms) and improvements to
Eastgate
- More available
- Because the shops are handy and good public transport
available
- The loss of corner dairy through armed hold-ups
- Because of new shopping centre (The Palms)
- The loss of local dairy due to armed robbery
- The Palms development
- Eastgate
- Easy to get to
- Supermarket close
- Can walk to shops now
- Better parking and more shops
- New shops and local shopping centre
- Malls nearby
- I can go up to Countdown or go down to Riccarton
- Plenty malls in my area - can get everything I want here
- Extra places to go, more variety, the malls, more
competition
- It is handy to me here - shops and mall have everything
- Easier to get to, more of them
- More accessible and better variety particularly with
malls
- Eastgate is handy and warm
- Refurbishment of Eastgate and Countdown supermarket
- Seems to be more of them
- Because we have moved to be closer and the hours are open
longer
- The shopping mall is convenient
- Respondent has shifted
- Shirley Mall opened. Same amount of time to walk there as
to town
- Malls and so many shops you don't need to go into town.
With malls all the shops are there - no need to walk all
over town
- New Shirley Mall
- New malls
- They are everywhere now
- The bigger malls like Eastgate, Brighton and The Palms
are well located for us
- Good car parking at Spotlight and The Palms
- More malls are available
- The Palms and Eastgate are more pleasant
- More shops at Bishopdale now
- Better range, upgraded
- People in each area of the city have good facility for
shopping
- Upgrading of mall area
- Because of upgrading, shops are nicer now
- Now two shopping centres very close - The Palms and
Northlands
- Better malls
- There's bigger and better malls - Northlands, The Palms.
The malls are growing, they're getting bigger and flasher
- you no longer have to go to town - that's the key
reason
- The main shopping centres are evenly spread out in the
various different suburbs - ie Riccarton, Northlands etc
- The malls make it very easy and very convenient; the
parking is very easy. Parking's the key to business. Some
malls don't have enough parking - South City is one. They
shouldn't have been allowed to build that without ample
parking
- I think the distance from where I live - Northlands and
Bishopdale - range of shopping available has improved in
the last 12 months
- In that they're putting up more malls in different areas,
so that means less travelling rather than traffic
- Because we live near Northlands Mall and that has had a
major overhaul and having a picture theatre there is
really great with teenagers
- Because we have shifted
- Riccarton - with all the streets redone
- Shifted locations
- Need new mall at Barrington
- All out of city now, no parking problem
- The Palms opened
- The Palms
- Opening of The Palms
- The Palms opened
- The Palms opened
- Because no decent shopping area this side of town
- All too close to town, hard to access with traffic and
parking. Don't seem to be putting money into quiet
suburbs - Barrington
- There are more shops here now and there's a lot of new
malls and shopping centres around now
- Needs to be a dairy here - they've closed it to build a
pub
- The new shopping centre in Shirley has made it more
convenient and easy
- Because there's more of them there on main roads and bus
systems. Plus the shops carry everything that you need
- Things are often shifting - we go to places and find that
they're no longer there, they've moved
- New shops been built by BP station
- Revamped Northlands so they provide a good service
- Taken away post offices and banks that were near me - I
have to walk all the way to Northlands
- Northlands Mall is great. Within walking distance for me
- Very hazardous with parking in or near Northlands Mall -
not happy with parking and exits not good
- Northlands etc
- Difficult to get to Northlands by car because it has been
made larger much more traffic
- Because Northlands Mall has been finished and is very
convenient for me
- Northlands Mall is great
- Mall (easy parking)
- More variety of shops - good service
- Big selection - everything we want or need
- More choice
- Northlands has been revamped more shops close to home
- Convenient shopping all under one roof, more choice
- More easy car parking. Access easier. Northlands is handy
as are the other suburban malls
- Northlands Mall has been done up - good parking and range
of shops - handy also to Bishopdale
- With the new malls and location being handier
- More shopping malls around
- More variety - less need to go out of suburb
- Too far to go for local shops - no easy access to public
transport
- New mall opened
- The Palms
- Development of The Palms
- The Palms opened
- More malls easy parking
- Respondent has started working which has made it harder
for her
- I like The Palms and Eastgate
- Venues like The Palms are one-stop shopping and pleasant
atmosphere
- The development of The Palms provided competition with a
wide range of retail outlets
- Because I shifted
- Just the new shopping areas seem to be placed more
centrally within the suburbs
- Well the shopping areas are probably closer to where I
live - since I have shifted in the last year
- Because it's a new complex - Avonhead - and everything is
far handier and far more selection
- The development of the suburban malls has been an ongoing
process - we've certainly seen an improvement in Avonhead
and Riccarton
- The malls are handy - you can get what you want in
Avonhead or Riccarton
- Well there's shops all around - there's the Bush Inn,
Riccarton, Avonhead, Staveley- I've got a good variety to
pick from
- Not so far to travel - easy parking
- We've got the "The Palms", Northland Mall's
been extended. Less need to go into city for shopping
- I moved to be closer to shops and for health reasons have
found them more convenient as time's gone on
- Bigger variety, closer to home, but traffic volume has
increased. A "bottle neck" in Papanui and
Northlands
- With all the new malls it's much easier under cover, and
better parking
- I like the new Palms - more variety. Don't have to travel
so far to get what I want
- Northlands Mall development - don't need to go to town
anymore
- Northlands Mall improved shopping
- Development of Northlands Mall - don't have to go to town
+ local picture theatre
- Northlands Mall enlarged - can't go to city because of
lack of car parking
- Town picked up, Northlands and Riccarton Mall improved
- Bishopdale Mall is half empty, in need of redevelopment.
Now I have to travel further to purchase goods
- Extended/redeveloped Northlands Mall supermarket open
longer
- Northlands development much improved - like having local
theatre
- Like visiting Northlands, no need to go into town, like
the food mall
- Northlands now bigger and better
- Refurbishment of Ilam/Clyde Rd shopping centre suits me
- Better parking, don't need to go into town
- Malls in area redeveloped - ability to access from
Sawyers Arms Rd much safer
- Can get everything in suburbs - local picture theatre
very handy. Northlands much better
- More choice locally, previously had to go to town for
choice. Now can go to Northlands, Bishopdale, Shirley,
Riccarton
- More variation, more variety and longer hours -
Northlands
- Northlands Mall development has provided a local theatre
- Northlands Mall much better. Would prefer lots of small
malls
- Bishopdale bigger and better recently
- I don't go into town very often because I can go to the
branches in the suburbs now
- Northlands development - the number of shops
- Northlands Mall has a big car park which makes it easier
to access the mall from where we live
- Cause they're doing up all the malls. More car parking
and that at Papanui
- Better for groceries. Better shopping out in the suburbs
now, it's really good
- The shops around the suburbs are all right, you don't
have to go into town
- The new Palms shopping centre has gone up, everything's
convenient
- They are easier to get to because of new roads. It used
to take half an hour to get to Northlands
- The Palms has just opened
- The shopping complex in Bower Ave is much better now
- They built the Shirley shopping mall
- You can't buy anything you want in the shops in this
area. Lots of shops have changed and they are
second-grade shops and supermarkets are not big enough
- We've got the new Palms Shopping Centre and Eastgate has
been done up
- The Palms - more department stores, closer
- Increased the size, improvements to the Bishopdale Mall
- Upgraded Bishopdale Mall
- Better range of shops
- More of them - everywhere
- Because you have to go out to malls
- Because smaller shops are overtaken by malls
- Miss the little shops that the bigger shopping centres
run down ie. Not enough business
- Easy to get to local shops. Well lit, safe, and good
service. Recently moved into locality well serviced by
shops
- Moved into area that is close to Riccarton, Fendalton and
Northlands Malls
- Because I have moved closer to shops
- The supermarket is coming to Ferrymead
- There's no particular shopping area over this side of the
hill
- Growth of Ferrymead shopping area
- They closed the post office on this hill and I still miss
it
- They are closer and have better facilities (of a higher
standard)
- More convenient if you have a car
- They are building a new super market at Ferry Rd. The
malls are improving
- Locality suits me and serves me well
- Improved Fendalton Village
- Because of the hugeness of the malls, following the
American trend. They have a short life and not
appropriate for our smaller population. Gradually leads
to a select group of shops and the mall
- There is no parking in the city
- We always shop at Riccarton usually in the mall
- Because we have a variety in one area
- The malls are handy, also Sumner, Brighton and Woolston
- Supermarket is coming to Ferry Road
- Linwood's a good shopping centre now
- The amount of traffic round here has made it so hard to
get from intersections onto the main road. No more quick
trips to the shops
- Parking is too difficult now in the central city when one
only needs a short stop (5mins or so). It used to be
easier
- There are lots of easy-to-reach shopping centres. It
would be different if we couldn't use a car
- Vehicle access for the type of shopping we do
- The suburban malls are much more accessible than the city
centre
- The shopping malls for parking and variety
- The developments in Shirley, Papanui and Riccarton are
too far away for us
- More restaurant/bars in the area where I work
- Shopping has always been inconvenient in this area but
with a supermarket being planned for Ferry Road it's got
to be on the improve
- We could do with a supermarket down on Ferry Rd - we hope
it happens soon
- We are waiting for the supermarket to be developed in
Ferry Road
- More places to go with free parking
- Plenty of shops at the malls
- I don't drive and I've moved further away from shops
- There are more shopping malls and you can get all your
shopping in one dollop
- There is a bigger selection - more malls
- Commercial organisations develop large malls and shall
shopping centres one could walk to are gone. Now more
people have to use cars
- More malls
- Extension of Eastgate has been an improvement
- Countdown is now convenient for respondent
- Improvement of malls eg Eastgate
- Don't have to go into town, because new mall is close by
- Easy walking distance, not relying on public buses now
- More of them. A new mall just round here
- New shopping mall just around the corner. Much more
choice
- They've just built the new mall "The Palms"
- I find it difficult to find things and get what I want in
the new Palms Mall and you can't get help
- New mall is handy
- We have a wide choice
- More shops have gone up
- They have brought the shops to the people
- Mall development and good parking has given more choice
- Ease of parking by the shops and the opening of the malls
especially The Palms
- Because there are more malls, everything is under one
roof and everything you need is there
- More shops around this area now
- The Palms in Shirley
- Local vegetable shop opened
- Pak 'n Save Papanui, Northlands Mall
- New Elmwood vegetable shop means I can have fresh veges
daily
- Malls (suburban) have better range of shops eg Northlands
and Riccarton
- Because local vegetable shop opened, also a garden centre
- The record shop got taken out of Barrington Mall and now
I have to find a record shop elsewhere
- We have just shifted and the shops on this side of town
are less convenient. More limited range of shops and not
so close. Barrington could be developed into a bigger
shopping centre
- Now the Beckenham Trustbank has gone I have to get the
nurse to take me to Sydenham. I pay for a taxi.. Can't
manage steps or use my hands much
- I only shop in the city - no butcher shop. Very expensive
grocery shops - no big shops for groceries
- You don't have to go to town so much as there's more
variety in the suburbs
- More variety
- They are leaving the city centre and coming out to the
suburbs
- More shopping centres to choose from
- Variety of shops and malls
- The problem is the lack of transport in getting to them
- More variety and easy access
- They've upgraded a lot of supermarkets around the town
and a couple are close to here - Eastgate and The Palms
- I moved house but it was my choice
- There used to be more little shops around this area but
they're closed down now
- They've just become closer. More shops have opened up in
Stanmore Rd. Round the corner we've got The Palms and
easier access
- Not very many supermarkets on this side of town if you
don't have a car
- More shops now closer to smaller communities
- Well, there's been the Shirley Mall and changes in
Stanmore Rd area
- A lot of stores are down-sizing and moving into other
areas, so I have to go further
- It's so easy to get to them, from here it's walking
distance to every shop
- Greater range and closer proximity
- More shops, more choice
- Mall has become better and more popular
- More shops now
- Because of refurbished mall
- Because of shifting
- Because of shifting
- Seem to be more variety in one place - ie The Palms
- Don't really know the reason
- We lost BNZ and Postbank at Edgeware. Only have Trustbank
now but there are 22 branches closing. Go to Armagh St to
collect my pension and use postal facilities. Everything
at Edgeware because Shirley opened their big mall
- They shift the shops further away
- The Palms is handy to me
- Cranford Street too far away to get a bus. I can't walk
that far
- Redevelopment of Bishopdale and Northlands
- Having a theatre at Northlands
- Bigger malls have everything you need - don't have to
travel far
- The malls have been built up - Riccarton mainly,
Barrington, Sydenham, Bush Inn occasionally and if you
have a car it's no problem
- I like Riccarton Mall - that's a handy place and there
are a reasonable number of shops to look at
- More choice of shops on my way home by car from work in
the city
- We have moved closer to convenient shops
- I've moved to a place closer to shops
- Now we haven't a car, we can't get to larger shopping
areas. Buses don't go where we want to go. Linwood Mall
- Most are too far to walk to and I no longer have a car
- It is harder to walk to the shops as I'm getting older. I
have no car, there is no bus close by. Shopping seems to
get heavier
- Business closing up in Riccarton
- Shops closer now
- I have shifted
- Variety has improved
- Improved Fendalton Village and Northlands Mall
- Fendalton Village
- Fendalton Village
- Fendalton Village has improved
- Because they've made car parking easier and a bigger
variety of shops at Northlands. However those sort of
places are over heated - that's my pet hate about them
- Well Northlands have upgraded themselves and Bishopdale.
It's become more convenient because I've moved from one
side of the city to the other. The only thing that
bothers me is they're all the same, there's always
Glassons, Mitre10.... no variety
- Just cause we're closer to them since we shifted
- They're bigger and better - more accessible
- With the malls - they've modernised that side of it. The
shopping side of it outside of the city is good -
Papanui, Northlands etc
- Shirley Mall having all been redone
- New complex at Shirley
- Bigger and newer and more of them
- New complex at Shirley
- More shops now
- New complex at Shirley
