- Don't like them taking down old buildings and new ones
going up. Brighton has suffered from other shopping
centres in other parts of the city being built, there are
always building work going on
- Modern architecture not in keeping with the historic
value of the city
- Too many shops have closed especially in the inner city
- Lack of concern of CCC over the destruction of historic
buildings
- I don't like to see old landmarks demolished
- Free parking not provided for city centre evening
activities
- Have destroyed a lot of the character of the city
- Don't like the old buildings being pulled down
- Pulling too many old buildings down
- Don't like the architecture of the civic centre
- The building of new housing does not provide enough
arterial routes to reach the city
- Losing character - historical buildings disappearing
- Loss of green areas and historical buildings
- New buildings all look the same, no character to them.
Christchurch is losing its character, its charm. Did have
a value as an architectural masterpiece
- Because the buildings are too modern and do not blend
with the old Christchurch
- Subdivision - loss of trees, high-rise apartments -
Salisbury Street and Park Terrace, removal of the old
Canterbury College buildings - how many trees will be
left there?!
- Don't like some of the new buildings
- Because of the loss of the traditional character in
Christchurch city - and also the designs of the new
buildings should be more in keeping with our character
- Extra traffic - too many cars - streets aren't wide
enough to cope
- I disagree with the townhouse developments and design -
the lack of space and privacy
- All the buildings built in the city that have reduced the
sun and made the city cold and dark
- The new construction of both residential and commercial
property in Christchurch does not fit with the cities
character
- The garages in front of sections, awful - more cars on
the street as a result of the infill
- Because of the destruction of stations
- Because of the new high rises and the demolition of the
historic buildings in the city
- Too much infill housing and townhouses
- Too crowded, hard to find a good sized section for a
family due to in fill housing
- The in-building is putting greater stress on utilities
- Bring a lot of foreigners into the city
- Pulling down old buildings there will be nothing left but
a concrete jungle
- Architecture not very imaginative
- Overall the effect is not beneficial
- Too much in filling. Too many nice old buildings knocked
down in name of progress
- Ugly Convention Centre
- I don't like the removal of character from the city
- Don't like the infill housing at all - there will be
nowhere left with gardens soon
- Too much subdivision - make land too small - affects
traffic, lack of sun - environmental health
- Becoming busier, prefer tranquillity
- The number of buildings and subdivisions in Christchurch
- The only thing I think of is that wretched Convention
Centre and that's terrible, so sterile looking - it
hasn't got a tree around it - it's horrible
- Concerned about the impact the casino is having on
people's lives
- Hate old buildings being destroyed. We must retain the
character of Christchurch
- Concerned that we destroy our history - Cathedral should
have remained highest point in the Square - city is dead
- Everyone gone to the malls in suburbs
- I don't like them taking down old buildings and putting
up concrete boxes - lose character of city
- The Square has been ruined with the cobblestones - no
grass or flowers. The food caravans stink and all the
no-hopers are in the Square
- With all the new malls traffic has become a problem.
Entry and exits from streets eg South City
- Don't like high rise buildings, prefer the way it used to
be - we've lost the character of Christchurch
- Subdivided sections - infill housing - have enough land
in Christchurch without subdividing existing sections
- Destruction of old buildings to make way for
"progress"
- Too congested - trees coming down - too much traffic
- Removing old buildings, character building all going
- Too many character homes pulled down to make way for town
houses jammed together
- In too much infill housing to many old building e.g. in
Square being pulled down
- High rises in city are not attractive and even though a
lot are empty building continues
- Overcrowded
- Too much infill - too many large houses on small sections
- I have the feeling that it's spreading too wide now. E.g.
Rolleston this will cause blockages on the Main South
Road because people have no work out there and have to
come into the city
- Because of the tramway
- There isn't enough control on the high density building.
Too much cross-leasing. Too many historic buildings being
destroyed
- Successive councils have permitted buildings without
character which have already ruined the central city and
if these trends continue as they have over the last few
years - what is already architecturally vulgar will
become even worse
- Too many malls for the population - all the shops are the
same in the malls
- Too much tearing down history - too much development. NZ
has such a short history they seem to pull it down
regardless and as time goes on we will have less and less
- Knocking down character buildings and putting up too many
with no character
- Casino is hideous. Turning centre of Christchurch into
theme park for tourists i.e. keep own identity - don't
lose special character
- Because I don't like the closed in feeling of the new
architecture next to the old architecture
- Areas are becoming too crowded with infill developments
- More crowded - people are being crowded into smaller
areas. Gardens are disappearing
- In fill housing changes character of areas. Increases
areas of hard surface. Loss of trees
- Don't approve of character dwellings or businesses being
removed
- Concerned about demolition of old buildings - feel it is
unwise to destroy old character of city
- Townhouses, units, flats construction is too plain -
don't like square tiltslab square box appearance!
- I feel sad when I see the old buildings come down. They
should ban architects - the new buildings are all new,
white, stucco. NO beauty in them at all
- Empty shops around the place look awful. Shops till the
empty ones are filled up
- Because they're knocking down all the nice old places and
trying to squeeze in as much housing as possible
- I would have preferred apartment blocks in the inner city
e.g. Square instead of tourist hotels
- Using areas that shouldn't be built on e.g. Travis Swamp,
it's very cold and wet and not a good area to build on
- The size of buildings, some of the minimal size sections
with the buildings, the lack of quality materials, the
places are going to look shocking in 20 years time
- It's not as visually appealing as it used to be. There's
different bits of buildings everywhere that just don't go
together
- Too much infill housing
- Too much development - knocking down historical old homes
to develop area
- Too many houses, flats in areas - not backyards for
children
- Overcrowding by subdividing sections
- I don't like the building of new shopping centres when
there is so many empty shops and shopping centres. If
distresses me to see so many empty shops. We are wasting
our land resources
- The character of the city is disappearing as older
buildings are being pulled down. There are enough
high-rise buildings now
- Getting too crowded in some places
- Concrete jungles
- Because of infill housing - the closeness
- The Council is allowing building to go on. They're
allowing too many to be built on too small land areas.
They're cramming them in
- Current fad for tilt slab apartment degrades the
attractiveness of the city generally
- Too many houses on back sections. Water to lie around
